RMU2-B MEASUREMENT TERMINAL BLOCK (BASE)
Q: The status LED on the RMU2 base goes solid green and then turns off. Is this OK?
Yes, it is OK. During normal operation, the status LED will illuminate solid green for about 8 to 40 seconds and then turn off. The RMU2 goes into a sleep state to conserve battery consumption after taking measurements and making a transmission to CorView.
Q: The status LED on the RMU2 base is usually solid green. I see solid red. What does that mean?
A solid red status LED indicates that the RMU2 battery level is low. Replace the batteries with new Energizer Ultimate Lithium L91 AA batteries.
Q: What is the maximum AC voltage the RMU2 can measure?
The maximum AC input voltage for the RMU2 is 105VAC. If the voltage you want to measure is greater than 105VAC, use a 3:1 voltage divider (Mobiltex Part Number A01160RMU21). Set the slot scaling factor to 3 for the channel with the 3:1 divider using the RMU2 Configuration Editor.
RMU2 ANTENNA
Q: What is the difference between an RMU2-SI, RMU2-S and RMU2-G antenna?
The RMU2-SI is the Iridium satellite communications variant of the RMU2. The RMU2-S utilizes the Globalstar satellite network. The RMU2-G is the cellular RMU2 antenna.
Q: Which cellular network does the RMU2-G antenna utilize?
AT&T in the USA, Rogers in Canada. Cellular network coverage maps can be used to ascertain if your sites have cellular coverage.
Q: Why is my RMU2-S / RMU2-SI not transmitting to CorView?
Ensure satellite antennas have an unobstructed clear view of the sky. The more sky visible, the better the chances of successful communications. If RMU2 satellite antennas (RMU2-S / RMU2-SI) are mounted right beside a building or on the side of the rectifier enclosure (not on top), the RMU2’s view of the sky may be significantly reduced. Look up and check for any obstructions such as building over-hangs. (see also “Q. Overdue.” in CorView Alarms section).
Q: The RSSI (Receive Signal Strength Indicator) is different each time my RMU2-SI reports in. Is this normal?
Yes, this is normal. The Iridium satellites the RMU2-SI utilizes are in-motion orbiting around the earth. When the satellite is directly above the antenna, it will report a strong RSSI. If the satellite is low on the horizon when the RMU2 transmits, a lower RSSI is possible. The RSSI will change throughout the day as the satellite constellation moves through its orbit.
Q: Can I use any AA battery when replacing the RMU2’s batteries?
No. It is critical that you only use Energizer Ultimate Lithium L91 AA batteries in the RMU2 for reliable performance. These specific Energizer batteries are available from Mobiltex or at most major retailers.
RMU2 PROGRAMMING CONFIGURATION
Q: I am getting a “Failed to Ping RMU2” error when connecting to the RMU2 with my RMU programmer.
For PC based configuration:
- Check that the Serial Port in the RMU2 Configuration Editor (bottom right area) is set to “USB”.
- Be sure there is no other configuration or firmware programming software running in the background on your PC.
- Ensure that the programmer drivers are installed on your PC.
For mobile device configuration: (RBT1 connection)
- Ensure the RMU2 is not reporting a low battery level (Install new batteries if it is).
- Confirm both the antenna and the base are connected to the RBT1.
- Connect to the RBT through the RMU2 config app. Do not connect through your mobile device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Try turning the Bluetooth off and on again on your mobile device.
- Try forgetting or unpairing the device in your mobile device’s Bluetooth settings then reconnecting using the RMU2 config app.
- Make sure no other mobile devices are already connected to the RBT1.
- Try reinstalling the RMU2 config app on your mobile device.
Note: Do not leave the RBT1 connected to the RMU2 after configuration as it will rapidly drain the RMU2 batteries.
Q: I am getting a “Failed to enter bootloader” error when updating the firmware for my RMU2.
Reset the RMU2 by disconnecting the RMU2 base from the programmer and hold down the Test button for about 10 seconds. Start the firmware update first and then connect the RMU2 base.
Q: Can I configure an RMU2 remotely?
No. The RMU2 is a one-way communication device. The RMU2 must be configured locally.
Q: Can you determine what the scaling factor is for the RMU2 remotely? Can you change it remotely?
Unfortunately, no. The shunt scaling factor can only be viewed and programmed locally with an RMU programmer.
Q: I am replacing only the RMU2 antenna at a site, do I have to reprogram?
The answer is no if you are replacing the antenna with the same communication type antenna since the configuration is stored in the base.
If you are changing the communication type or changing the generation of the communication device (for example, upgrade from 2G to LTE), then you must reconfigure the RMU2 for the new antenna type. Please contact Mobiltex Service & Support for further guidance on configuring your RMU2 for a different antenna type.
Q: I am replacing only the RMU2 base at a site, do I have to reprogram it?
Yes. The configuration is stored in the RMU2 base and will be lost when it is replaced.
Q: Can I configure an RMU2 before travelling to a site?
Technically, yes but on-site configuration is generally preferable. To configure in advance, you need to know the site configuration, such as measurement type, slot limits, shunt value, and GPS coordinates etc. Exercise caution when programming the GPS location manually. A special code is required to activate the manual GPS editing feature in the RMU2 Configuration Editor. Please contact Mobiltex Service & Support or refer to the RMU2 manual for further guidance on manually setting GPS coordinates.
USING AN RMU2 WITH CORVIEW
Q: I am replacing an RMU2 (both base and antenna or antenna only) at a site. What do I need to do in CorView?
To maintain data continuity and historical readings, you must replace the old ESN with the new ESN. (Note: Only CorView Administrators can perform this task)
After installing, configuring, and powering up the new antenna, follow the steps below:
- Log into CorView.
- Select [SETUP] – [Site List].
- Find the auto-created site. The site name will be the ESN of the new antenna.
- Delete the auto-created site. NOTE: you will lose any readings the new antenna has already sent.
- Find the existing site with the old antennas ESN assigned to it.
- Click on the pencil icon to edit the ESN assigned to the site.
- Select the new ESN from the RMU ESN drop-down list.
- Click the [Update] button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.
- Perform a button press on the RMU2 to send a message to CorView.
If the ESN is reassigned in CorView before the antenna is physically changed, you can skip steps 2 through 4.
Q: I changed out an RMU2 some time ago and now have two sites with readings. Can I merge the old readings and new readings?
Unfortunately, no. After a significant amount of time has passed, the sites cannot be merged. The old site can be marked as not active in Site Setup to prevent overdue alarms and emails.
Q: I selected the readings every 6 hours reporting plan. Why is there a delay in receiving my measurement data in CorView?
The RMU2 transmits readings in sets of four readings per transmission. Refer to the reporting plans listed in the table below.
RMU2 Reporting Plans | ||
Plan | Readings | Transmission |
1 | Every 7 days | Every 28 days |
2 | Every 2 days | Every 8 days |
3 | Everyday | Every 4 days |
4 | Every 6 hours | Everyday |
Q: My RMU2 is not showing up on the Map in CorView.
Either the RMU2 did not acquire GPS position lock at the time of programming, or it missed Power Up / Button Press message which contains the GPS information. Connect the RMU programmer and open the RMU2 Configuration Editor application. Reconfigure the RMU2 confirming the GPS position is populated at the bottom left corner in the PC based RMU2 Configuration Editor. The RMU2 acquires its GPS location through the programmer or the mobile devices when using the mobile configuration app. It is important to confirm that the GPS location has been acquired in the RMU2 Configuration Editor before writing to the RMU2.
Q: Can I configure the RMU2 to ignore alarms while I am interrupting my rectifiers? I am getting alarm emails from My RMU2s during interruption.
You can mark RMU2 sites as inactive in CorView during interruption to prevent alarm emails. The RMU2 will still transmit the alarm to CorView, but it would not send the alarm emails when the site is marked as inactive.
You need to be a CorView administrator to set a site as inactive. To change a site to an inactive in CorView:
- Select [SETUP] – [Site List].
- Click on the pencil icon next to the site you want to edit.
- Uncheck the “Active” check box at the top.
- Click the Update button at the bottom to save your changes.
Note: Sites marked as inactive will not show up on the map unless you check the “Show Inactive Sites”.
TROUBLESHOOTING RMU2 CORVIEW ISSUES
Q: My RMU2 readings are fluctuating, but when I check at the site with a multi-meter, everything seems fine.
Check for connection issues such as poor crimps, loose screws, corrosion on connections and damaged wires. Also check for excessive AC at the RMU2 terminal strip. Consider deploying a data logger to confirm the readings. The RMU may be catching intermittent issues that were not previously found with monthly visits.
Q: My RMU2 is reporting as Overdue in CorView.
CorView knows when the RMU2 should be sending in measurements but did not receive them. There are numerous possibilities for missed transmissions:
- Check that the antenna is activated on the communications network. This can be found in CorView under [SETUP] – [RMU List].
- Check for physical damage at the site.
- Ensure the RMU2 antenna’s battery level is adequate.
- Ensure the RMU2-G cellular antennas are in an area with good cellular coverage.
- Ensure the RMU2-S/RMU2-SI satellite antennas have a full, unobstructed view of the sky. Check for building overhangs, dense trees etc.
Q: All the readings are correct in CorView, but I am getting an alarm for No AC In. What is this?
he RMU2 contains a non-contact 50Hz/60Hz AC field sensor which can be used to detect the presence of AC line voltage. To utilize this feature, a fused cable assembly is wired to the rectifier’s hot AC line. Ensure the AC Sense box is checked in the RMU2 Configuration Editor. If you are not monitoring the AC Line, then the AC Sense box should be unchecked in the RMU2 Configuration Editor.
Q: My RMU2 is reporting Over-Range in CorView.
- Check for a loose or damaged connection cable between the base and antenna.
- Check for poor connections such as bad crimping, loose screws, rusty connections, damaged wires etc.
